Copyediting & Proofreading
Copyediting ensures that your manuscript is technically accurate and correctly formatted.
Proofreading is a final check: it ensures there are no lingering typos or minor errors.
Copyediting focuses on improving; proofreading focuses on fixing.
Copyediting
Copyediting typically takes place before proofreading. It ensures that text is consistent, clear, coherent, complete and correct. It might include:
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar checks
- Consistency checks
- Suggestions for rephrasing, rewriting or deletion to improve readability
- Flagging potential factual errors
- Flagging potential legal issues, such as copyright infringement
- Marking up structural features for typesetter, using coding or Word's Styles pane
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final quality check. This is usually carried out on screen, using Word's Track Changes or by marking up PDFs. If required, I can mark up hard copy using BSI symbols. Proofreading includes checks for the following:
- Typographical errors
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Pagination
- Consistent capitalisation, hyphenation
- Layout issues, such as spacing and line breaks
- Consistent referencing and labelling

"For anyone who has the ambition to get published and would like genuine feedback and guidance, then I thoroughly recommend Ellison Editorial. The service was quick, concise, and extremely helpful – and certainly spotted things I had missed."

How it works
1.
We establish your brief and agree terms, so we can get started.
2.
I work on your project. You may not hear from me until the end of the process, unless queries arise. Alongide editing, I complete a style sheet and an editorial report.
3.
You receive your edited manuscript, alongside two helpful documents: an editorial style sheet and a comprehensive editorial report.
